Skin sagging is a natural part of aging. Collagen and elastin are 2 essential proteins associated with skin firmness. The production of these proteins decreases as people age.
Hyaluronic acid levels also reduce with age. It is a molecule that helps skin retain moisture and appear fuller.
Sagging skin may also occur after significant weight loss. The skin stretches to accommodate an increased body mass. Over time, this can damage the collagen and elastin int he skin leading to sagging after weight loss.
Common Causes
Age:
- As skin ages, it loses 2 important proteins manufactured in the dermis – elastin and collagen
- Elastin gives skin its elasticity and provides firm skin with the ability to bounce back when stretched
- Collagen is produced by fibroblasts and comprises of tightly-constructed fibers which help skin maintain its structure and firmness
- Sun exposure
- Environmental pollutants
- Lifestyle factors (e.g. poor nutrition, excess alcohol intake)
- Weight loss at a rapid rate
- Pregnancy
Illness:
- There are a few medical conditions that are marked by saggy skin like 1) very rare type of cutaneous T-cell lymphoma known as granulomatous slack skin = gradual slackening of skin on the elbows and knees, 2) ehlers-danlos syndrome = a rare connective tissue disorder that is inherited. People with EDA have a defect in collagen production resulting in saggy, doughy skin on the face
Solutions
- Stay out of the sun. UV rays can increase inflammation and redness, possibly leading to post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation*
Search: SPF 45
- Use anti-aging products

* TIP: always apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher on a daily basis and re-apply if under prolonged sun exposure
- Gain weight at a slow and steady rate during pregnancy
